To educate New Haven's youth about the natural and social systems that affect the Quinnipiac River.  To design and execute a community service action project that addresses an issue for youth to identify and teach what they have learned and accomplished to others; thereby building a constituency of urban advocates for the Quinnipiac River.  This project is called Kids Explore!, Kids Do!, Kids Teach!

Six youth learned about the history, ecology and uses of the Quinnipiac River, created a poster discouraging littering, and created a River Bingo game.

Elevation Change & Toxic Organics in the Quinnipiac Tidal Marshes

Funds are requested to support the continuation of measuring elevation change and water levels in the Quinnipiac River marshes in efforts to understand the rate and causes  of marsh drowning (conversion to mudflat) that has been observed there.

The project produced several observations: parts of the marshes appear to be experiencing substantial subsidence; internal recycling of organic sediment may be a source of material to the marsh surface; water levels are controlled in part by watershed runoff; and concentrations of PAHs and PCBs in sediments are quite high.

Extensively documented successful transitions to natural land care in Cheshire. Spinoffs of the Safe Grounds Campaign include promotion of the use of municipal leaf compost as an inexpensive resource for improving municipal soil, as well as the promotion of research on the use of a bacillus that causes milky spore disease and destroys insect larvae that eat grass roots.

Safe Grounds Campaign

To support the Safe Grounds Campaign which helps reduce non-point source pollution from lawn pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in the Quinnipiac River watershed.  

As a result of the Partnership’s advocacy, the Connecticut legislature extended and strengthened the pesticide ban to include all day care facilities in Connecticut. Additionally, the Partnership collaborated with the DEP and NOFA in three compost workshops for municipal officials. The Partnership also worked with the staff at the Connecticut Governor’ Residence to convert the lawns to organic care.
