Projects

To support the monitoring of marsh surface elevations as well as the salinity and vegetation in one lobe of the marsh, and to support analysis of vegetation change and surveying of marsh migration at the Quinnipiac Meadows Preserve.

To support a half day Quinnipiac Update conference; improvements to public access to the Little River, a Quinnipiac tributary, at Lowe's on Route 80 in New Haven; education of phosphorus control; and promotion of pollution and diversion permit participation.

To support identification, characterization and assessment of industrial pollutants in water and on indigenous fish populations in the Quinnipiac River.

To support the establishment of bird nest boxes at multiple locations in the Quinnipiac River watershed and monitor the ecology of songbirds that breed in the watershed.

To support the creation of 360 degree panoramic images along the Quinnipiac River and its passive recreation trails which will be viewable in an interactive Google maps 3D GIS whole earth model with newly created geolocated panoramic orbs.

To support expanding the trail network, conservation management plan, and educational programming of Quinnipiac Meadows Nature Preserve and expanding the Schooner Summer Camp programming.

To support curriculum development and implementation assistance for the design and installation of bioswales and native plant/pollinator gardens at Lincoln Middle School and Washington Middle School in Meriden.

To provide general operating support for recreational and educational programs related to the Quinnipiac River and New Haven Harbor.

To continue monitoring vegetation change and mudflat development in the Quinnipiac River brackish marshes, and begin to test hypothesized causes for the observed wetland loss.  To complete a nitrogen and trace metal analyses and begin to assess how marsh loss has affected the load of pollutants to the river.

To offer a short course in river processes to local environmental activist and municipal officials.  The course will cover the basic hydrologic, geomorphic, chemical and biological processes that govern stream ecosystems and how they are perturbed by human activities. Participants will receive the scientific tools that they need in order to understand and critically evaluate environmental data on the Quinnipiac River.
